Celaré Architectural Glazing creates a new art form on a highway bridge.
The Veterans’ Glass City Skyway is a bridge spanning the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. Figg Bridge Engineers of Tallahassee, Florida created the unique design for the Ohio Department of Transportation to honor the history and tradition of the American glass industry in Toledo. The bridge has a cable-stayed main span that is supported by a single 122 meter pylon. The top 60 meters of the pylon features glass on all four sides with a glass pyramid on the top. The glass combines multiple layers of low-iron glass and mirror striping, bonded together with Dupont SentryGlas® Plus Interlayers. By day the glass reflects the sky, clouds, and the Toledo skyline. By night the pylon is transformed into a work of art. The 96” x 48” glass panels are backlit by 384 LEDs which can be programmed to create up to 16.7million color combinations. The brilliant tower is visible at night from a distance of more than three miles.
Global Security Glazing and parent company Standard Bent Glass Corp were uniquely suited to partner as the glass manufacturers for this complex project. According to Kent Hartley, President and C.O.O. of both firms, “We were able to combine our expertise in custom glass work with our strong background in laminated security glass to help achieve the clients vision for the bridge”
